UNESCO evaluators from France and China arrived in Davao City on August 16 to begin a five‑day validation of Mt. Apo’s nomination as a Global Geopark. Their mission includes dialogues with stakeholders, immersion in Indigenous communities, and visits to sites like the Mt. Apo Geothermal Production Field. The evaluation will verify the self‑assessment submitted by DENR Regions XI and XII, focusing on Mt. Apo’s rare tectonic setting, geothermal resources, cultural significance, and rich biodiversity.

Protected Area Superintendent Clint Michael Cleofe emphasized that the evaluators must see how local communities care for the mountain, noting the role of the Bagobo Klata, Bagobo Tagabawa, and Ovu Manobo in its stewardship. Preparations for the bid began in 2022 and involved biodiversity and geological studies, as well as coordination with LGUs and IP groups. If successful, Mt. Apo would become the second UNESCO Global Geopark in the Philippines after Bohol, with the decision expected by June 2027. This recognition would highlight Mt. Apo not only as the country’s highest peak but also as a globally significant site where geology, culture, and biodiversity converge.
