A Philippine Eagle was recently spotted thriving in the forests of Mt. Apo Geopark, providing a rare glimpse of the country’s national bird in its natural habitat. This sighting, believed to be the offspring of a long-established pair, was documented over several days and has been celebrated as a hopeful sign for the survival of one of the world’s most endangered raptors

The monitoring efforts were supported by the Bagobo-Tagabawa Indigenous community’s Bantay Bukid forest guardians, whose vigilance has been essential in protecting Mt. Apo’s ecosystems. Their involvement highlights the importance of Indigenous stewardship and scientific research working together to safeguard biodiversity. Along with the eagle, other species such as coleto birds, hanging parrots, and native orchids were also recorded, reinforcing Mt. Apo’s status as a key biodiversity area.

In addition to its ecological significance, the Philippine Eagle represents cultural pride and resilience. Its ongoing presence in Mt. Apo serves as a reminder that conservation goes beyond protecting a single species; it involves preserving the interconnected web of life. This sighting is both a celebration of nature’s endurance and a call to strengthen collective efforts to ensure that future generations will still see the “King of Birds” soaring over the skies of Mindanao.
