The Davao City Council has approved, in its second reading, a proposed ordinance that seeks to designate Mt. Apo Natural Park (MANP) as a geopark. This initiative supports the park’s application for UNESCO Global Geopark (UGGP) recognition. The proposal was initiated by the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR-11), led by Director Bagani Fidel Evasco, and received endorsement from Councilor Diosdado Angelo Mahipus Jr. It underscores the geological history, biodiversity, cultural significance, scenic beauty, and educational potential of Mt. Apo.

Stakeholders have indicated that achieving UNESCO recognition would facilitate improvements in education, enhance conservation efforts, and increase community awareness. However, concerns have been raised about unregulated trekking activities and illegal settlements in areas designated for strict protection. The Protected Area Superintendent clarified that although certain activities may be permitted, they must be subject to appropriate regulation to ensure the integrity of the park.
